Avengers: Infinity War‘s release is nearly here, and that means we’ve seen the vast majority of the pre-release marketing for it at this point. Amidst all the trailers, posters, and so on, Hawkeye and Ant-Man have been noticeably absent. This has led to all sorts of jokes at the expense of Hawkeye in particular, and even the people involved with the movie have gotten in on the fun.
At a recent fan event, Infinity War‘s cast and crew were asked a variety of questions, including who will defeat Thanos. As you can see in the full video (via ComicBook.com), co-director Joe Russo’s answer centered around it requiring a team effort. Iron Man actor Robert Downey Jr. had a much different take.
“Here’s my guess, because I haven’t read the script. Because Jeremy Renner is not in the poster, I think he’s the only one that can beat Thanos–I think it’s Hawkeye! No, I think only Jeremy [Renner, who portrays Hawkeye] can defeat him.”
Russo jokingly followed up by declaring that “Hawkeye is Thanos!”–which would mean the character has been featured as prominently as anyone. What a twist that would be.
There had been some question as to whether Hawkeye would be in the movie at all; not only is Hawkeye not featured in the marketing, but Renner’s name has been absent from posters. With so many characters and actors to feature, perhaps he just didn’t make the cut–but Hawkeye does have some role to play.
“Hawkeye, coming out of Civil War, is in the same position that Cap and Falcon are at the end of that movie,” co-director Anthony Russo explained. “[They] were on Cap’s side coming out of the Civil War. Some made certain decisions and others made other decisions that led to different paths in them dealing with oversight in this movie in a different way. So Hawkeye’s on his own journey in this movie.”
